Finished thei image, the process was wonderful like a morning mantra during the weekend over christmas. Scanning was a pain eight scans to get the complet image and still I had problems fitting it all together

Have you try photo tools for panorama to assemble your different scans of your big drawing ?
If you're using a PC try microsoft ICE, very efficient and simple tool :
